Expert Organic Chemist Consultant Specializing in New Product and Process Development

Consultant #872

Expertise

  • Organic chemical product and process development, including sulfonylurea herbicides, fluorinating agents, hydrazines, aromatic aldehyde's, crystal violet and nylon carpet dyes.
  • Specialist in sulfonlyurea chemistry and synthesis.
  • Diverse areas of organic chemistry ranging from basic/discovery research to process development and scale-up.
  • New synthetic methods to support new product and process development. ~Interdisciplinary teams to achieve goals.

Experience

DuPont Company: New Product Development

  • Received a departmental award for developing a synthetic method in the sulfonylurea herbicide research program which was widely used by the Discovery research personnel to broadly expand the scope of the patent coverage of this important business area.
  • Developed a new commercial dye for nylon carpet.
  • Prepared approximately ten thousand compounds in the course of career in search of commercially useful physical or biological properties.

DuPont Company: New Process Development

  • Explored the scope and limitations of a new DuPont proprietary fluorinating reagent with a multi-departmental team. The work was presented at an international conference and published in order to generate interest for future sale of the reagent.
  • Developed a new synthetic method to prepare unsymmetrical hydrazines of unique structure. Method was publicized interdepartmentally at DuPont.
  • Developed a new synthesis of aromatic aldehyde's (patent).
  • Developed a selective catalytic air oxidation process for synthesis of Crystal Violet (raised yield from 50% to quantitative and greatly reduced the waste stream).
  • Received a departmental award for synthesizing the haptan for the first immunoassay method of sulfonylureas. The immunoassay was crucial in obtaining and maintaining registration of the sulfonylurea line of products, the mainstay of the agrochemical business of DuPont for the last ten years.
  • Developed the processes on three new products in support of the dye business and carried through the manufacture demonstration on ton quantities and wrote the operating instructions for further plant manufacture.
  • Joint project with Central Research & Development on coal liquefaction (high temperature/pressure chemistry).

Honors & Publications

  • Presentations at Gordon Research Conferences.
  • Sixteen patents.
  • International Society for Heterocyclic Chemistry
  • The Chemical Heritage Society

Education

  • Ph.D., Northwestern University, Evanston, IL
  • B.A., DePauw University, Greencastle, IN
