Experience
Independent Consultant, 1978 - present
- Operate a small business engaged in custom fabrication of NAFION perfluorinated ionomers products.
- Provide technical assistance for new applications.
- Develop several new applications for custom fabricated NAFION products.
Du Pont Company 1959 - 1995
Research Fellow
- Develop new applications for NAFION products.
- Found a non-telogenic, environmentally friendly, replacement for ozone depleting chlorofluoro carbons used in the manufacture of NAFION.
- Developed a process to manufacture thin NAFION films suitable for the emerging fuel cell application.
- Provide technology advice to senior management
Senior Research Chemist, Senior Research Associate
- Member of the Exploratory Chemistry Group of the Polymer Products Department~
- Identified commercial applications for NAFION.
- In 1964 identified NaCl electrolysis as an attractive application for NAFION and conducted first laboratory demonstration. Recognized the need for improved membrane strength and selectivity.
- In 1966 approached General Electric about the use of NAFION in fuel cells and scaled up production to provide material to GE%u2019s for their manufacture of fuel cells for the space program.
- Developed fabric reinforced NAFION.
- Scaled up monomer synthesis and polymer fabrication to provide material for commercial tests.
- Demonstrated the concept of a highly selective barrier layer to improve membrane selectivity.
- Assisted engineering in developing pilot plant and full scale commercial processes for producing NAFION.
- Supported the DuPont legal defense against hostile patent activities.
Research Chemist
- Worked to develop the chemistry involved in the synthesis of adipic acid from cyclohexanol / cyclohexanone and methyl methacrylate (MMA) from acetone cyanhydrine.
- Identified 1,3 acetone disulfonic acid as a major biproduct of the MMA synthesis. Suggested possible applications for this compound.
